Miss Courtney’s English Class

“This week we watched a movie called “Mad Hot Ballroom” in my Grade 10 classes. I really wanted them to see another part of
America, a poor America made up of all types of people (namely immigrants) in order to understand that Americans aren’t
simply rich, white people. I also thought the movie was very applicable to the 10th graders themselves because the movie
is about a special program that sends teachers to poor, intercity schools in order to help improve their lives. This is
something similar to what Sampoerna is doing for the students at SMA 10. I think the students really enjoyed the movie, since
they got to see a different view of America, the real America. They also loved the dancing and the music in the movie.
Next week we will discuss their impressions, and hopefully this won’t be the last documentary they see in my class.
